THIS Christmas time, Londoners will once again hear the loud bongs of Big Ben.

The famous bell has been quiet since August, so that essential repair work can take place. The work is expected to last until 2021.

Officials agreed the bell could bong for special occasions, such as Remembrance Sunday and New Year’s Eve. But now, there are plans to bring back the bongs from 23 December until New Year’s Day.

• Big Ben is the name of the bell inside the clock tower. The actual tower is called the Elizabeth Tower.
