READ: A huge house-sized asteroid called 2012 TC4 passed by Earth this morning!

News

AN asteroid the size of a house flew past planet Earth at about 6.40 this morning – while most of us were still in bed!

The asteroid is known as 2012 TC4 and passed within 27,000 miles of the surface of Antarctica, before heading back to space.

The asteroid doesn’t pose a threat to Earth, but does give experts the chance to test their asteroid tracking devices and space defences. These would be used if an asteroid ever was to get closer to the planet.

Asteroid 2012 TC4

  • The asteroid was first spotted in 2012.
  • It was picked up by the Pan-STARRS telescope at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, USA.
  • It’s around 15 to 30 metres in size.
