Hurricane Maria strikes the Caribbean islands

News

HURRICANE Maria has made landfall (reached land) on the Caribbean island of Dominica with 160 mph winds.

The hurricane has been upgraded several times in a matter of hours, strengthening from a weaker Category 1 storm in a matter of hours to a Category 5 – the most dangerous category of hurricane.

Maria is the third hurricane to hit the Caribbean in two weeks.

Relentless destruction

The Prime Minister of the island of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, had to be rescued after his roof was blown off, and his house flooded.

Maria is expected to cause similar amounts of damage to Irma, which was also a category five hurricane. It killed at least 37 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

Maria is expected to move on towards Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the next 24 hours.
