AUSTRALIA’S huge Uluru landmark, also known as Ayer’s Rock, is soon to have a ban that stops tourists from climbing it.

The team of people who look after the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park all voted to end the climb, as the site is a sacred place to Aboriginal Australians.

It will be formally banned from October 2019 onwards.

The landmark stands at 348m high, and the area surrounding it is home to a number of natural springs, caves and ancient paintings.

Local people have long asked visitors not to climb the landmark, and recently signs have been put up explaining the site’s status as sacred.

However, this is the first time that it’s legally been banned to climb the Rock.

“It is an extremely important place, not a playground or theme park like Disneyland,” one member of the National Park’s team said.
