WATCH: I Don’t Get It – What is cyberbullying? How can I help stop it?

FYI: I Don't Get It

CYBERBULLYING is when people use technology to threaten, intimidate or upset others. The internet, smartphones, email, forums, online games and social media are all tools for cyberbullying.

We all know that the internet can be a great source of fun and information, but it can also be used as a platform to bully.

Forms of cyberbullying

Cyberbullying can take lots of different forms. It could be a nasty message or a text, someone posting pictures or videos of you or people spreading rumours.

Why do people cyberbully?

But why would people use technology to bully? Sometimes bullies find it easier to target others this way. They can do it quickly and they don’t have to see the hurt they’re causing.

Bullying of any form is always wrong, though.

Tackling cyberbullying

Here are some things to remember if you or anyone you know is being bullied.

  • You don’t have to deal with it on your own. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, a parent or a carer. Or speak to a counsellor at Childline.
  • There are lots of people who can help and support you. That includes friends, too.
  • Don’t reply to any nasty messages or comments, this might make things worse. Keep the messages so that you can show them to someone. Screen-grabbing the evidence is a good way of doing this.

Bullying of any kind can make people feel very sad and lonely, and it can affect their self-confidence. That’s why it’s important we all help to stamp it out.

Prince William VS cyberbullying

This week, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, unveiled an action plan aimed at tackling cyberbullying, and launched an online code of conduct.

The campaign is called ‘Stop, Speak, Support.’ It has been created with the help of a taskforce, made up of the biggest media and technology companies, children’s charities, parents and young people.

The aim is to create a safer and more supportive life online, for all of us.

You can find out more about the campaign in this week’s First News.

I hate bullying and many things that I have heard are shocking. Fortunately, I have never properly been bullied but I know many who have. Social Media is great for contacting people but it also gives bullies and criminals opportunities to hurt people.
