COULD squirrel culls be the answer to protecting forests and trees in England?

Ministers have shown support for the idea, following evidence that grey squirrels damage young trees. The rural affairs minister, Lord Gardiner of Kimble, says unless the squirrels are managed, the problem will get worse. What do you think?

Squirrels have a life just like u and me they shouldn’t be blamed for wildlife and nature

OMG!!!!!!!! Weirdos! Who would do that? We’ve been living with squirrels forever and they should just let nature take place (even though I’m not a squirrel fan). It’s as silly as blaming global warming on the planet Jupiter!
Leave the squirrels alone, you have no evidence!

Well, I think you shouldn’t because that is their natural habitat. Besides, don’t we pollute the Earth as well?

NO. We've done this before with red squirrels and now we're worried about them disappearing from the country all together. Culling, in my opinion, is almost always a rash and ineffective option that will only help in the short term. If we really eat to save trees, the maybe we should cancel HS2 which is going to destroy a lot of them and has gone over budget multiple times, along with also making many people homeless because their house needs to be demolished so they can build track there. But no! Lets just kill the squirrels!

Why would you do that? Squirrels have been around nature for ages so you want cull them why dont we stop cutting them done we have created deforestation we do so many bad things to the environment and you want to blame it on squirells

harryrocks · 8 years ago

Why on Earth would you kill a squirrel! We should not interfere with nature. I agree with gingetoff. ?

No! There are many other bigger threats to trees,so why do we feel that squirrels are to blame? And anyway, killing is never the answer.

Squirrels are just minding their own business and it's not like people don't cut down trees. We are the most responsible for forest damage so why are people blaming it on squirrels.

NO WAY! Squirrels are adorable. I mean, they’re not AS important las trees, but if squirrels have put oxygen, we wouldn’t be killing TREES, would we? ——sorry if that doesn’t make sense!——

I voted no, it is unfair , i agree with gingetoff.

I think yes because grey squirrels kill other rare squirrels and are damaging the environment. There are lots of them in the woods and I think that if they kill them humanely then it is ok.

Trees help us breathe. Grey squirrels aren't even from Britain and they're mainly the ones causing this effect.

I said yes because the squirrels can be given something else to damage which we don't want instead of trees, because we actually need them.

Squirrels should not be killed just to save trees they may be damaging the trees but we are damaging the planet and no one is trying to kill us
SAVE THE SQUIRRELS! SAVE THE SQUIRRELS!

squirrels have feelings too , and it is not their fault about trees. i say NO!

They are like rats and can be vicious

claudine · 8 years ago

Grey squirrels are bad, but not red squirrels though

Its more our fault than the squirrels, and our damage can be stopped. There must be better ways than killing squirrels, like relocating them away from vulnerable trees, or spending that money on repairing the trees, or educating people about what they can do to save the trees.

No way! It’s so unfair on squirrels! And there so cute! ?????

YES.squirrels should be culled because if you plant a lovely young tree and a squirrel makes a home in it, it is nearly killing the tree and anyway grey squirrels are not endangerd but as you may know people are cutting down forests the size of football fields in only sixty seconds but if we cull the squirrels we will be able to plant more young trees without them being destroyed.

It's kind of in the middle as we need trees but need to be careful of the habitants. So it's kind of srtressing comment if same

Caged not culled squirrels have a life so why not give them a happy home? Think about the pain (even though i too am not a squirrel fan E.G stealin' my conkers when i want some but they are still cute and funny) DO NOT CULL.

If they are killed in a humane way it would be fair and we would have more oxygen from the undamaged trees ? but also that's a bit sad???

Squirrels are living things just like us and trees. Just because we've killed trees and wildlife to have homes doesn't mean that we should take it out on squirrels when we should never have cut down so many trees in the first place

shpee · 8 years ago

To everyone using rare squirrels as an argument for culling grey squirrels, please remember why they are rare; we culled them. We culled red squirrels for this exact reason and now we're worried about them. It's not worth the risk of repeating history again and almost making grey squirrels extinct from this country.

What are Squirrels doing wrong?Red Squirrels are endangered and so we have no right to kill them. However people can Find ways to stop the Squirrels from causing damage like growing trees in a green house before putting them into the wild.
